The course teaches the FHIR interoperability standard and how to apply it in real world scenarios for exchanging data between healthcare systems. Starting from the basics and moving onto intermediate level concepts, attendees will have a chance to try out their new skills with a series of guided “hands on” activities, throughout the sessions. The activities interact with live servers of test data, in the FHIR ecosystem.

Completion of this course will provide attendees with the knowledge to start using FHIR in their own development projects. Attendees will learn what FHIR aims to achieve, and how it works, as well as how to navigate and understand the FHIR documentation, knowledge sources and tools, that will be important when using FHIR as a platform.

Those who intend to work the HL7 FHIR standard, either as software developers, architects, API designers, business analysts, or managers of teams who wish to understand the technical aspects of FHIR.

Attendees are expected to have a knowledge of computerized healthcare data, including the basic principles of data modelling and software design. For the hands on exercises ability to work with XML or JSON is necessary. No prior knowledge of FHIR is expected, but a background with HL7 standards (HL7 V2, CDA etc.) will be useful.
