Dr. Joseph Coyne

Joseph S. Coyne, DrPH, MPH, is Adjunct Professor of Healthcare Leadership in the Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership Program at Brown University, Visiting Professor in the Graduate Healthcare Management Program at Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Italy, and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Health Policy and Administration, in the College of Nursing at Washington State University. He has offered seminars worldwide to over 2,500 students through affiliations with Peking University Health Sciences Center in Beijing, China, the University of Lugano in Lugano, Switzerland, Catholic University in Rome, Italy, and Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. His operational experience includes Vice President of Operations for a 100,000 member HMO, and serving as a senior partner in an international information technology company. His clients worldwide include the French Ministry of Health, German Ministry of Health, Danish Ministry of Health and Beijing Association of Teaching Hospitals. His accomplishments include funding for his research as Principal Investigator that totals $1.1 million, leadership of a nationally accredited health management programs, and over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Coyne’s research work focuses on the area of health payment reforms and the Triple Aim Program and Value Based Purchasing (VBP), to examine the transition from volume driven to value based payment methods. This work includes not just a study of changing payment methods, but also an examination of changing role of the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, the Chief Executive Officer, and the entire “C-Suite”. As an additional achievement, he is the recipient of the Chris Selby-Smith award for his keynote address “Who is Going to Manage Health Care Systems in the Future?” at the Society for Health Administration Programs in Education (SHAPE) Symposium in Sydney, Australia in July 2014. He delivered the keynote address in November 2014 at the 2nd Leadership Program & Conference on High Performance Healthcare Organizations in Madinah, Saudi, Arabia. He will deliver the keynote address at the “The 1st Strait Rehabilitation Industry Forum & Belt and Road Eastern Rehabilitation Industry Forum”, at Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Fuzhou, China in  2018.

Dr. Coyne has over 30 years of healthcare experience in international health finance, health information technology, and mergers/acquisitions/ joint ventures.
